Star CB Victor Hampton committed to the Florida Gators on Thursday. The Charlotte native from Independence High School is Florida’s fifth commitment for the 2010 class. Find out what Hampton had to say about Florida and why he committed to them so early in the process.

“I have been communicating with Coach (Urban) Meyer, Coach (Vance) Bedford, and Coach (Kenny) Carter the most,” said Hampton. “I committed to Florida today because it’s a great school and I’ve been communicating a lot with them. We have been talking about it for some time and we talked about how I need to make my grades right. My grades are almost there and it’s basically up to me on what I want to do with my life right now. They have showed a lot of interest in me and said they would love for me to come down there, so I’d love to come down there too. I know the staff at Florida isn’t only concerned about football.”

Aside from Florida, Hampton had offers from schools such as Clemson, NC State, and Tennessee. Despite these offers, there really wasn’t any other school that stood out as much as Florida. He is going to Florida with the mindset that he has what it takes to play early.

“I haven’t really communicated with any other teams,” he said. “Florida is basically the only team that I’ve been communicating with. It’s up to me on how much I will get to play my freshman year. I want to come down there and perform and practice hard. The coaching staff feels that I am a good athlete and I feel like I have a good chance to play early my freshman year. I feel like if you have the talent then they will put you in there.”

Hampton compares his game to former Georgia and current NFL star Champ Bailey. Hampton prides himself on his physical play and likes to jam off of the line. In committing to Florida, he hopes to enjoy the same success that former Florida Gator and Independence QB Chris Leak did.

“It didn’t really play a part in my decision but I know that he (Leak) was a great athlete and was successful at Florida,” Hampton said. “If he was successful, I feel like that I should be able to go to Florida and produce as well.”
